Shoes don’t make your Walt Disney World trip, but they can definitely break it

Having the perfect pair of shoes may not be the reason your trip to the Magic Kingdom is magical. But the wrong pair can leave your feet feeling like Drizella squeezing into the glass slipper. After years putting on the miles in different pairs of shoes, I think I’ve found the best fitting, breathable, stylish pair of shoes that offer excellent all-day comfort.

Here’s why the Adidas NMD_R1 is my absolute favorite pair of shoes for all-day comfort at Walt Disney World.

The Boost Midsole Reduces Foot Fatigue

Compared to previous pairs I’ve worn by Nike, Asics, Vans, and even other Adidas models, I can’t tell you how many 16 hour park days I’ve put into these shoes without having so much foot fatigue. The shoe’s midsole (the thick slab of rubber that separates your foot from the ground) borrows from Adidas’ Boost technology, which was designed to weave together soft cushioning with responsiveness. Originally made to improve running shoe performance, this tech trickled down into the entire wide world of sports – and streetwear. The result? Comfortable strides and good energy return, which can be crucial toward the end of a tiring theme park day.

After over 50 park days in these shoes, I can say that they’ve certainly got plenty of cushion for all-day comfort without feeling like my feet are sinking into the ground. And that higher energy return gives the perfect cap to the end of the day, giving me even more comfort even as I sadly wave goodbye to Cinderella Castle.

It’s Both Lightweight and Durable

In addition to putting these shoes through a ton of park days, this pair of shoes were also my go-to pair for plane flights and road trips. Not to mention that these shoes also went through year-round Florida weather – we’re talking hot summers, late summer thunderstorms, and chilly (sub 50 degree) winter days. After all that abuse, these shoes still offer great all-day comfort.

I also can’t get over how light these shoes are. Surprisingly, the Men’s US 9 comes in at 10oz, which rivals popular shoes like Allbirds but is 20% heavier than shoes by On Cloud, another crowd favorite. To my feet, it doesn’t matter though, because shortly after I put these shoes on, I pretty much forget about them. These two factors alone – durability and weight – pretty much making them the most comfortable all-around travel shoe.

It’s Got Just Enough Room for My Flat Feet

I’ve got some really flat feet. When put in a room with 99 other people, I’m pretty sure there would only be 2 other people with feet flatter or wider than mine. For this reason, finding shoes wide enough for my feet without feeling like a limousine for my toes has always been a challenge. The NMD_R1 came to save the day.

These shoes leave just enough room for all my toes to wiggle comfortably without feeling like my feet will swim back and forth within the upper.

The Primeknit Upper Caters to Your Individual Foot

I think a lot of this shoe’s comfort (aside from the Boost midsole) comes from its Primeknit upper which molds to my feet, adding support where needed but also leaving just enough room to keep my feet happy. Add in those color-blocked EVA plug inserts for enhanced stability, and you’ve got added stability through each step. Put together, every stride feels natural. It’s like the shoe is simply guiding my feet through its natural movement, letting them feel free.

Oh, an added benefit to the Primeknit is that since the shoe’s tongue is integrated into the rest of the shoe, the laces almost act as decorative material. I can leave them tied and slip on and off my shoes easily!

It’s Got Just the Right Amount of Support

Okay, I need to address the big flying elephant in the room. There’s something that needs to be said about the arch support in the NMD_R1s, or lack thereof. Arch support and shoe inserts is highly debated among shoe users these days (AKA just about everyone). And if you ask me, arch support has its place. In the end though, the question shouldn’t be “does it have enough arch support?” It should really be, “How similar is this pair of shoes to my previous pair of comfortable shoes?” If your feet are more comfortable in a pair of shoes with more pronounced arch support, jumping into a pair of NMD_R1’s will feel like a drastic change in feel. However, if you’re more used to a pair with less arch support, you might latch onto these shoes more easily.

Take one step in these shoes and you’ll find there’s not much extra “shoe” underneath your arch. However, after just a few uses, I’ve found that the soles got more comfortable. To me, this “break-in” period likely gave time for the sole to conform a bit to my feet. The result? Happy feet.

What do You Think?

So tell me, have you used the NMD_R1’s in the theme parks before? Let me know what you think of them in the comments! And if you’ve got a shoe that you want me to review, let me know!
